Aare Afe Babalola Drops Defamation Charges Against Dele Farotimi After Yoruba Monarchs’ Intervention

In a dramatic turn of events, Aare Afe Babalola SAN, the respected founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), has agreed to withdraw criminal defamation charges against activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi. This decision followed a late-night meeting led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other top Yoruba monarchs, who appealed for reconciliation.

The charges stemmed from claims in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, where he accused Babalola of corruption. The case, which gained traction in both the Magistrate Court and Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti, saw the activist standing trial for alleged defamation and cyberbullying.

Speaking at ABUAD, Babalola shared that he initially resisted interventions from notable figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Bishop Mathew Kukah. However, the powerful appeal of the Yoruba traditional institution swayed his decision.

“I have nothing to gain from his imprisonment or damages,” Babalola explained. “I am more interested in how to use my resources for the good of others. While this matter has deeply hurt me, I have chosen to let it go, thanks to the Kabiyesis.”

The Ooni of Ife commended Babalola for his exemplary leadership and contributions to society. “Your name is more valuable than silver and gold,” the monarch assured. “Nobody can tarnish your legacy. This resolution reflects the strength of our culture and values.”

Efforts to reach Comrade Dele Farotimi for his reaction were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. However, it remains to be seen if he will applaud Aare Afe Babalola’s decision to drop the case.
