The Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement will host a high-level policy dialogue on Africa’s expectations of the incoming United Nations Secretary-General in New York on September 19, 2026.

The dialogue, scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, will bring together policymakers, diplomats and thought leaders to examine Africa’s priorities as the international system undergoes major changes.

Themed “Africa’s Expectations of the New UN Secretary-General,” the meeting will focus on Africa’s expectations for the next UN Secretary-General and the continent’s role in shaping the future of global governance.

The Amandla Institute, founded by former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, said the dialogue would provide a platform for African stakeholders to articulate their expectations for the future of multilateralism and the reform of global institutions.

The discussions will also examine how Africa can exercise greater agency in shaping the global order and influencing decisions that affect the continent.

Fayemi is expected to welcome participants at the New York meeting, where attention will centre on Africa’s priorities and its place in an evolving international system.

The dialogue comes as African countries continue to push for greater representation and influence in global institutions, including reforms to the multilateral system.

The Amandla Institute said the meeting would create space for stakeholders to reflect on Africa’s priorities and the continent’s role in shaping the international order.
