Ekiti Marks White Cane Day with New Mobility Support for Blind Residents

Ekiti State marked the 2025 White Cane and Safety Day with a firm message on disability inclusion, dignity and mobility rights, as the state government distributed new white canes and pledged deeper support for blind residents across the state.

The event, themed “Vision Beyond Sight,” drew a large turnout in the Fajuyi area of Ado Ekiti where members of the blind community, caregivers and disability advocates marched to highlight the daily realities of navigating life without sight. The rally also became a platform for renewed demands on accountability within disability groups and stronger collaboration with government.

Princess Adetoun Agboola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, told participants that the day offers more than symbolism. She said the celebration reinforces the obligation of society and government to protect the rights and mobility needs of blind people, adding that Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration will continue to stand with them in practical, measurable ways.

She pointed to recent job placements, economic empowerment schemes and educational support enjoyed by several members as proof that the state government is backing its promises with action. She urged beneficiaries to carry themselves with dignity, uphold good public conduct and continue to break stereotypes that fuel discrimination.

Princess Agboola also pressed the leadership of the Blind Association in Ekiti to work in harmony with the national body, stressing that unity and transparent coordination remain essential for credible advocacy and effective management of the group’s affairs.

She praised members of the community who continue to excel in their trades and professions, noting that their achievements show that disability does not erase capability and that many in the crowd stand as evidence of resilience and talent.

The chairman of the planning committee, Gboyega Afolabi, applauded the government for its steady support, including mobility aids, employment opportunities and business grants. He said the initiatives introduced under Governor Oyebanji have lifted many members’ confidence and given them a clearer sense of belonging.

A major highlight of the gathering came when the state handed out new white canes to members with worn-out mobility aids and to others who had never owned one. The distribution, greeted with cheers, aimed to strengthen safety and restore independence in daily movement.

Beneficiaries, including Ibrahim Olajide and Precious Agboola, expressed deep gratitude to the governor, describing the interventions as life changing and a sign that the state is listening to the needs of persons living with disabilities.
