Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has described Afenifere leader, Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, as a towering symbol of integrity and principled leadership as the elder statesman clocks 100.
In a tribute issued on Sunday to mark Fasoranti’s centenary, Fayemi said the nonagenarian’s life and public service have shaped Nigeria’s democratic journey and strengthened the political and cultural identity of the Yoruba people.
The former governor, who also chaired the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, said Fasoranti remained one of the few national figures whose convictions never changed with political convenience, even during periods of crisis and uncertainty.
According to him, the Afenifere leader’s 100th birthday goes beyond a personal milestone and stands as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Fayemi traced Fasoranti’s political footprint from his days in the defunct Action Group during the First Republic to his role in the Unity Party of Nigeria under the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the Second Republic.
He also praised Fasoranti’s stewardship as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State under the administration of the late Chief Adekunle Ajasin, describing his service as disciplined, transparent and deeply committed to public good.
Beyond politics, Fayemi highlighted the elder statesman’s influence in education, noting that Fasoranti devoted decades to shaping young Nigerians as a teacher and administrator.
He said Fasoranti understood early that strong education and sound moral values remain central to nation-building.
The former governor also referenced Fasoranti’s long-standing campaign for restructuring and true federalism, saying the Afenifere leader consistently pushed for a fairer and more balanced Nigeria.
“His vision of true federalism was never about political fashion,” Fayemi said. “It was rooted in justice, stability and inclusive development.”
Fayemi, alongside his wife, Bisi, and family, congratulated the Yoruba leader for attaining the age of 100, saying his life continues to offer lessons in sacrifice, courage and fidelity to principle.
He added that at a time when public trust in leadership faces growing strain, Fasoranti’s record stands out as proof that character and consistency still matter in national life.
