Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has set the stage for intense political speculation after revealing he will announce his preferred successor in January 2026.
Speaking at the 11th Omituntun Ramadan lecture held at the Government House arcade in Ibadan on Monday, Makinde stirred anticipation among political watchers. Addressing the gathering in Yoruba, he expressed gratitude to Muslim leaders for their unwavering support and urged them to keep his administration in their prayers.
Then, with a wry smile, he turned to Abbas Oloko, a well-known socialite, and playfully cautioned him against taking down his billboard at Isale Alfa.
“I’m not yet a lame duck. Please leave my billboard at Isale Alfa,” Makinde quipped, drawing laughter from the audience.
With political activities expected to ramp up by early 2026, his cryptic remark has only fueled curiosity. “When the time comes, I’ll reveal the face of the person to be installed there,” he said, leaving the crowd hanging on his words.
The governor also used the occasion to call for peace and unity during Ramadan, emphasizing the need for harmony beyond religious lines.
Makinde’s statement comes amid growing speculation over his succession plan, setting the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested race in Oyo politics. With just under a year until his big reveal, the guessing game has officially begun.
