Amid growing speculation, the Nigeria Police Force has firmly denied rumors suggesting the return of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement on Monday, February 10, clarifying that SARS, which was officially disbanded on October 11, 2020, remains dissolved and will not be reformed.
“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is not back in operation. The recent information regarding SARS reformation and rules of engagement should be treated with caution. Nigerians are encouraged to verify the source of any information before accepting it as true,” Adejobi stated.
The police spokesperson urged citizens to rely on official sources for accurate updates, directing them to follow the Nigeria Police Force on social media via @PoliceNG on X, @ngpolice on Facebook, and @nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram.
The dissolution of SARS followed the massive #EndSARS protests in 2020, where Nigerians took to the streets to demand an end to police brutality and human rights violations linked to the unit. The protests led to nationwide demonstrations and a significant push for police reform.
Despite the unit’s disbandment, periodic rumors have sparked concerns among citizens about its possible return. However, the latest clarification from the police aims to put such speculations to rest, reinforcing the government’s commitment to maintaining reforms within the force.
