Three Things New Investors Should Know Before Buying Stocks

Published

on

Investing in stocks can offer opportunities for wealth creation, but beginners need more than money to get started. They also need the right mindset, a strategy and reliable information.

The Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) advises investors to understand their risk tolerance, conduct proper research, diversify their portfolios and maintain a long-term perspective. (SEC Nigeria)

For anyone preparing to enter the Nigerian stock market, three principles can provide a useful starting point.

1. Get Your Investment Philosophy Right

The first step is understanding what investing is and what it is not.

Investing is not a guaranteed route to quick cash. Stock prices can rise and fall, sometimes sharply, and investors can lose money.

The SEC notes that equities can offer higher potential returns but also carry higher risks than some other investment products. (SEC Nigeria)

That makes patience important.

A long-term investor should understand the difference between short-term price movements and the underlying performance of a company. A stock may experience periods of volatility without necessarily changing the investor’s long-term objective.

The SEC also advises investors to avoid impulsive decisions based on market movements and maintain patience and discipline. (SEC Nigeria)

2. Invest Strategically, Not Emotionally

Knowing that you want to invest is only the beginning. The next question is where and why you are putting your money.

Investors should research companies before buying their shares. That includes examining financial statements, earnings, debt levels, cash flow, dividend history, management and the company’s position within its industry.

The SEC specifically recommends researching a security’s fundamentals, financial performance, industry trends and market outlook before investing. (SEC Nigeria)

Investors can also study different sectors of the Nigerian Exchange.

The NGX tracks sectors including Banking, Insurance, Industrial, Consumer Goods and Oil & Gas through dedicated sectoral indices. (Nigerian Exchange Group)

However, identifying a sector that is performing well does not automatically make every company within that sector a good investment.

This is where deeper analysis becomes important.

Fundamental analysis focuses on the financial and business strength of a company. Technical analysis, meanwhile, examines price movements, trading patterns and market trends.

Neither approach guarantees that a stock will rise.

The objective is to gather enough information to understand what you are buying, the risks involved and whether the investment fits your financial goals.

Diversification can also reduce the risk of depending too heavily on one company, sector or asset. The SEC recommends spreading investments across different assets, industries and geographical regions where appropriate. (SEC Nigeria)

3. Build The Right Knowledge Base

Information can influence how investors interpret movements in the stock market.

Company results, dividend announcements, changes in management, government policies, interest rates, inflation, economic conditions and developments within an industry can all affect how investors assess a company.

That makes financial education an important part of investing.

The SEC’s investor education programme encourages Nigerians to understand market risks, investment strategies and investor protection before making decisions. (SEC Nigeria)

The Nigerian Exchange also runs X-Academy, which provides capital-market education for investors and members of the public. (Nigerian Exchange Group)

For a new investor, the goal should therefore be more than finding the next stock that might rise.

It should be developing the ability to interpret information, assess risk and make decisions based on evidence rather than rumours or social media hype.

Ultimately, successful investing involves uncertainty. No research method can eliminate market risk or guarantee returns.

The strongest foundation for a beginner is therefore a clear investment philosophy, disciplined research and continuous financial education.
