Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has spoken out about the viral video showing an altercation between him and a female student, Precious Mbakwe. The incident, which has stirred intense debate on social media, allegedly took place along the corridors of the university’s Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies.
In a video interview with the institution’s media outlet, Dr. Okoye recounted his version of events. According to him, the confrontation began when he encountered Mbakwe recording a TikTok video in the hallway while he was on his way to his office. He stated that he politely tapped her and asked to pass, but was met with an insulting remark. This prompted him to return and verify whether she was a student of the department.
Realizing that the video was being recorded, Dr. Okoye asked Mbakwe to delete it immediately. When she refused, he attempted to confiscate her phone, which, he claimed, led to the situation spiraling out of control. “That was when all hell was let loose,” he said.
The video of the altercation has since sparked mixed reactions, with some defending the lecturer’s actions while others argue that he overstepped boundaries. As the controversy continues to gain traction, Dr. Okoye has stated that he will refrain from further comments on the issue pending the findings of the investigative panel set up by the university.
