Fresh from their Club World Cup triumph, Chelsea began brightly when Marc Cucurella’s header forced Ismaila Sarr into a goalline clearance. But their momentum was quickly checked as Eberechi Eze’s thunderous free-kick was disallowed following a VAR review, sparing goalkeeper Robert Sánchez from early embarrassment. The Spaniard later redeemed himself with a strong save to deny Jean-Philippe Mateta, while Trevoh Chalobah squandered Chelsea’s best opening by blazing over from close range.
The Blues’ new signings failed to deliver. João Pedro struggled to hold the ball up, Jamie Gittens looked overwhelmed on his Premier League debut, and Cole Palmer, so often Chelsea’s attacking heartbeat drifted through the game without influence. Palace, disciplined and compact, grew in confidence as the half wore on, with Eze again stinging Sánchez’s gloves late on.
It took the arrival of 17-year-old Estevão to inject urgency into Chelsea’s play. The Brazilian drove at Palace’s back line with pace and imagination, unsettling defenders who had comfortably dealt with his teammates. Still, Chelsea managed just two shots on target across the 90 minutes, a damning statistic for a side with title ambitions.
Liam Delap and André Santos both wasted late chances as the visitors threatened to snatch all three points themselves. Maresca’s men, despite heavy possession, lacked the invention to break down a Palace side content to absorb pressure and counter.
For Chelsea, the result is an early warning that possession without penetration will not win them the league. For Palace, it was a reminder that Oliver Glasner’s side, fresh from their Community Shield success, can frustrate England’s biggest clubs on their own turf.
