Ekiti State Government has begun statewide distribution of food items and cash assistance to persons with disabilities (PWDs), reinforcing Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s social inclusion agenda across the 16 local government areas.

The three-day intervention, coordinated by the Office of Special Education and Social Inclusion, targets vulnerable residents facing economic pressure. Beneficiaries received bags of rice, beans, and direct cash support as the programme rolled out simultaneously across councils.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, said the initiative reflects the administration’s sustained commitment to protecting the welfare and rights of persons with disabilities. She noted that the programme forms part of broader government measures designed to improve living conditions for vulnerable citizens through targeted support and empowerment schemes.

Princess Agboola also reminded beneficiaries of the state’s free healthcare programme for PWDs, urging them to register at primary healthcare centres in their communities to access the services. She said the government has continued to strengthen the disability sector through upgrades of special schools, recruitment of specialised personnel, provision of modern learning equipment, and establishment of therapy centres across the state.

According to her, empowerment and skills acquisition programmes introduced by the administration have already enabled several beneficiaries to establish small businesses with financial support from the state. One beneficiary trained in catering services confirmed that the programme significantly improved her income and livelihood.

Princess Agboola, however, expressed concern over what she described as the low participation of some eligible persons in financial assistance programmes, encouraging greater engagement in future interventions aimed at promoting economic independence.

Many beneficiaries who attended the distribution exercise commended the government’s support initiatives and pledged continued backing for policies that prioritise social protection and inclusive development in Ekiti State.
