Nigeria’s leading investor and philanthropist, Tony Elumelu, will mark his 63rd birthday on Sunday with the unveiling of 3,200 beneficiaries under the 2026 cohort of his flagship entrepreneurship programme, reinforcing his long-standing push to drive Africa’s growth through private enterprise.
The announcement, scheduled for March 22, coincides deliberately with his birthday, a date he has turned into a yearly platform for expanding economic opportunities across the continent. This year’s rollout signals one of the largest single-year commitments under the Tony Elumelu Foundation, with a total of $16 million in seed funding set for disbursement.
Each selected entrepreneur will receive $5,000 in non-refundable capital, alongside structured training, mentorship, and access to markets through the foundation’s digital platform, TEFConnect. The programme continues to target early-stage businesses, where access to capital remains tight despite growing innovation across Africa.
The foundation confirmed that over 265,000 applications were submitted from all 54 African countries, a figure that reflects both the scale of ambition among young founders and the persistent funding gap facing startups. Sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and the green economy dominated entries, pointing to shifting priorities in Africa’s business landscape.
Mr Elumelu, chairman of Heirs Holdings and Transcorp, built his reputation in banking after leading Standard Trust Bank before its merger with UBA. Over the past decade, he has repositioned himself as a leading voice for Africapitalism, his belief that African entrepreneurs, not governments alone, will shape the continent’s economic future.
Since launching in 2015, the foundation’s entrepreneurship programme has supported nearly 24,000 businesses and committed over $100 million in direct funding. Beneficiaries have gone on to create jobs, expand across borders, and generate significant revenues within their communities.
Sunday’s announcement will feature Mr Elumelu and his wife, Dr Awele Elumelu, who co-leads the foundation’s work. The event will be streamed live, drawing attention from policymakers, investors, and aspiring entrepreneurs watching closely for the next wave of African business leaders.
By tying his birthday to the unveiling, Mr Elumelu again shifts focus from personal celebration to continental impact, using the moment to widen access to opportunity at a time many young Africans still struggle to fund viable ideas.
