Former Governor of Ekiti State and ex-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Kayode Fayemi, has called on Nigerians to hold firmly to unity, resilience and hope as the nation marks its 65th Independence anniversary.
In a statement issued on his behalf by Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, head of his media office, Mr Fayemi reflected on Nigeria’s journey since 1960, describing it as a path marked by both hardship and achievement. He said the country had endured because of the determination of its citizens to rise above setbacks.
“Our strength as a people is rooted in our diversity and in our shared determination to build a better tomorrow,” the statement quoted him as saying. “Yes, we have been tested, but every challenge we have faced proves that Nigeria’s best days still lie ahead.”
Dr. Fayemi insisted that the nation’s diversity should be recognised as an asset rather than a weakness, warning against those who exploit ethnic and religious fault lines to sow division. According to him, the dream of Nigeria’s founding fathers can only be realised through unity and collective purpose.
“At moments like this, we must reject every attempt to pull us apart. Our future depends on standing together, not against one another,” he said.
The former governor urged Nigerians to draw strength from the sacrifices of past generations and challenged today’s leaders to provide visionary and selfless leadership capable of inspiring renewed faith in the Nigerian project.
“As we mark this Independence anniversary, let us reaffirm our confidence in this nation and in one another,” he added. “With unity, understanding and resilience, we can overcome our present difficulties and create a brighter future for generations yet unborn.”
