Hon. Ibrahim Kunle Olarewaju has congratulated former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, on his 61st birthday, describing him as a leader whose governance philosophy continues to shape democratic leadership, institutional reforms, and public service development in Nigeria and across Africa.
In a tribute issued on Monday, Hon. Olarewaju said Dr. Fayemi’s political journey, spanning activism, state governance, ministerial service, and international diplomacy, reflects a leadership approach rooted in ideas, institutional discipline, and long-term nation-building rather than short-term political gain.
He noted that Fayemi entered public office with a strong intellectual foundation in democracy, federalism, conflict resolution, and state-building, adding that this preparation influenced his governance style as Governor of Ekiti State, where policy decisions were guided by consultation, research, and institutional continuity.
According to the lawmaker, the former governor prioritised strengthening public institutions, professionalising the civil service, and building systems designed to function beyond political cycles, a model he described as “leadership focused on durability rather than visibility.”
Hon. Olarewaju added that Fayemi’s governance philosophy consistently placed human development at the centre of public policy, pointing to investments in education reforms, public sector training, and social protection programmes aimed at improving productivity, expanding opportunity, and preserving human dignity.
He also highlighted Fayemi’s reputation for team-based leadership, noting that the former governor built governance structures around professionals drawn from academia, civil society, development practice, and the private sector, creating decision-making processes that encouraged competence and accountability.
The tribute further emphasised Fayemi’s role in mentoring emerging political leaders and technocrats, stating that many public officials who served under his administrations now occupy strategic leadership positions within government institutions and political structures.
Hon. Olarewaju described Fayemi’s tenure as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum as a period that strengthened the organisation’s policy credibility, deepened its engagement with development partners, and repositioned subnational governance as a critical platform for reform coordination.
He added that the former governor’s continued engagement in peace-building, governance advisory work, and international policy dialogue has sustained his relevance beyond elective office, positioning him as a respected African voice in global democratic conversations.
While congratulating the elder statesman at 61, Hon. Olarewaju said Fayemi’s public service record demonstrates that leadership influence can endure through strong institutions, trained successors, and ideas capable of shaping governance long after political office.
