The Lagos State House of Assembly witnessed a dramatic shift in leadership as Mudashiru Obasa reclaimed his position as Speaker, ending Mojisola Meranda’s brief 49-day tenure. This power shift stemmed from an intervention led by political heavyweights Chief Bisi Akande and Chief Olusegun Osoba, both former governors, who were enlisted by President Bola Tinubu to resolve the escalating crisis.
The turmoil began on January 13, 2025, when more than 30 lawmakers ousted Obasa while he was in the United States, appointing his then-deputy, Meranda, as Speaker. Unwilling to concede, Obasa challenged his removal in court, sparking tensions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in Lagos.
Following weeks of negotiations, a closed-door meeting involving party leaders, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and state lawmakers paved the way for Meranda’s resignation. At the plenary session on Monday, Meranda stepped down, emphasizing her commitment to democracy and institutional stability. Other key officers elected during her tenure, including Deputy Speaker Mojeed Fatai and Chief Whip Okanlawon Sani, also resigned.
“I have made a personal sacrifice to restore peace to this House,” Meranda declared. “I am not a quitter, but stepping down is necessary to uphold democracy and prevent further conflicts.”
With the path cleared, Obasa was re-elected unopposed, taking a fresh oath of office. In his address, he praised Akande and Osoba for their role in brokering peace, assuring Lagos residents that the Assembly would remain dedicated to serving their interests.
“We have proven today that the Lagos State House of Assembly possesses the internal strength to resolve disputes while upholding integrity,” Obasa stated. “Our priority remains the progress and stability of our dear state.”
Despite earlier discussions suggesting that Obasa, too, would step down after his re-election, it remains unclear whether he will do so. Some party insiders hinted at ongoing deliberations, while others believe the matter has been resolved with Meranda’s resignation.
Security at the Assembly complex was notably tight throughout the day, with law enforcement agencies closely monitoring events. Lawmakers, many emotional, commended Meranda for her leadership and grace in relinquishing the position.
As the political dust settles, all eyes remain on Obasa’s next move and whether the APC leadership will push for further changes at the helm of the state legislature.
