The TikTok drama is heating up! President Donald Trump dropped a major hint recently, confirming that Microsoft might be in talks to snag TikTok’s U.S. operations. In a casual chat with reporters, Trump said, “I would say yes,” when asked if the tech giant was preparing a bid. He even predicted a full-on “bidding war” over the wildly popular app.
For those who missed it, this all started back in August 2020 when Trump, citing national security concerns, pushed TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell its U.S. branch. ByteDance initially approached Microsoft, but their CEO later called it “the strangest thing.” Spoiler: Microsoft didn’t seal the deal. TikTok later leaned toward Oracle as a potential partner, but that fizzled out too.
Fast-forward to now, and Trump claims there’s serious interest in TikTok from multiple buyers. “We’ll see what happens,” he said while addressing a crowd in Florida. “If we can save all that voice and all the jobs, and China won’t be involved… we’ll see what happens.”
Big names like billionaire Frank McCourt and Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary have also been floated as potential suitors. Even YouTube megastar Jimmy Donaldson, aka MrBeast, has thrown his hat in the ring after tweeting his interest and getting flooded with investor offers. Yep, TikTok’s future might just have a touch of YouTuber magic.
As for Microsoft, the company has kept things hush-hush, saying they’ve got “nothing to share at this time.” TikTok hasn’t commented yet either.
Meanwhile, Trump’s push to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations isn’t new. Both he and Former President Joe Biden have been pressuring ByteDance for years, citing concerns over user data being linked to the Chinese government. Just last week, Trump signed an executive order delaying a TikTok ban that had briefly knocked the app offline for its 170 million U.S. users.
