Nigeria was thrown into yet another nationwide blackout on Wednesday as the national grid suffered a major collapse, disrupting power supply across multiple states.
The system failure, which occurred minutes after 11 a.m., saw power generation plummet from 4,064 megawatts at 11 a.m. to a staggering 0.00MW by 1 p.m., leaving homes and businesses in darkness.
Sources within the power sector confirmed the grid disturbance, with most power plants losing generation capacity in quick succession. While the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to officially comment, insiders suggest a significant system failure led to the total collapse.
On its official X handle, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) acknowledged the outage, assuring consumers that efforts were underway to restore supply.
“Dear Valued Customer, We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas. While gradual restoration has commenced, we are working closely with stakeholders to stabilize the grid,” the statement read.
This marks the first major grid collapse of 2025, following a minor line tripping incident in January. In 2024, the grid collapsed 12 times, adding to Nigeria’s long history of power instability, with over 100 recorded failures in the past decade.
As the country grapples with yet another electricity crisis, millions of Nigerians are left questioning when a lasting solution to the nation’s fragile power infrastructure will finally emerge.
