Nigerian music artist, Olayode has revealed how a police arrest on his way to the studio inspired the recording of his latest single, “DND”, a song he made during a difficult period that also saw him dealing with homelessness.
Olayode, whose legal name is Oladipo Oluwasogo Richard, said he had taken a long break from music before linking up with Xico to work on a summer song he had already written.
He said he knew how he wanted the song to sound and was heading to the studio with his friend, Jaga, when the police arrested them.
According to the artist, they spent almost two hours trying to resolve the situation, which he said happened simply because they were music artists.
The experience left him angry with the police.
“That’s why anytime I say ‘fuck Nigeria Police,’ I mean it,” he said.
Olayode and Jaga were eventually released, but the arrest did not stop him from recording. He went straight to the studio that same day and completed the session.
That session became “DND.”
The song was released at a time when Olayode was also dealing with uncertainty over where he would live. He said he was homeless at the time and was scouting for a place with his ski, slang for close friend.
Despite the circumstances, he continued making music.
“I just couldn’t stop. No matter the obstacles,” Olayode said.
For the singer, “DND” is therefore tied to an experience he lived through rather than a fictional story created for the song.
“This isn’t fiction. It’s a real journey, and DND is music from a very real place,” he said.
Olayode is now asking listeners to stream the single, repost it and introduce it to other music lovers.
“Every stream, repost and recommendation means something,” he said.
