Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has expelled Precious Chimamaka Goddy-Mbakwe, a 300-level student of History and International Studies, over an alleged assault on Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer at the institution.
The incident, which quickly went viral on social media, occurred when Dr. Okoye approached Precious while she was recording a TikTok video, asking her to delete the footage. Her refusal escalated into a physical confrontation, during which she reportedly bit the lecturer. The dramatic scene, captured on video, sparked widespread debate online.
In an official statement released on Friday, the Acting Head of Information, Public Relations, and Protocol, Mr. Louis Njelita, confirmed that the university’s disciplinary committee conducted a thorough review of the case.
According to Njelita, the committee determined that Precious’ actions constituted gross misconduct and a clear violation of the institution’s disciplinary regulations. Following its recommendations, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, approved her immediate expulsion on behalf of the University Senate.
“The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University is committed to upholding discipline and ensuring a safe learning environment,” Njelita stated. He further directed the expelled student to vacate the university premises and return all university property in her possession.
UNIZIK’s swift and decisive action has reignited discussions on student conduct, social media influence, and disciplinary measures in Nigerian universities. While some argue that the punishment is justified to maintain institutional integrity, others believe alternative disciplinary actions could have been considered.
The university reiterated its stance on zero tolerance for misconduct, emphasizing that maintaining order remains a top priority to foster a conducive academic atmosphere.
