President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd) as the sole administrator of Rivers State, following the declaration of a state of emergency. This comes after Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and 27 lawmakers were suspended for an initial period of six months, a drastic measure aimed at restoring order in the oil-rich state.
Ibas, a decorated naval officer and seasoned strategist, is no stranger to high-stakes leadership. Born on 27 September 1960 in Cross River State, he carved out a formidable career in the Nigerian Navy, culminating in his appointment as the 22nd Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021. His military pedigree stretches back over four decades, beginning with his enrollment in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1979 and his commissioning as a sub-lieutenant in 1983.
His extensive training spans elite military institutions worldwide, from the United States Marine Corps University to the National Defence College in Pakistan. As a master strategist, he specialized in underwater warfare, amphibious operations, and maritime security, skills that saw him hold commanding positions on Nigeria’s most formidable naval vessels, including NNS Aradu, NNS Obuma, and NNS Ayam.
Beyond military operations, Ibas shaped Nigeria’s naval policies, serving as the Navy’s Provost Marshal, Director of Maritime Warfare, and later, Chief of Logistics. His tenure as Chief of Naval Staff saw him lead critical maritime security initiatives, combating piracy and enhancing Nigeria’s naval capabilities. Recognized for his service, he was conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) in 2022.
With his appointment as Rivers State administrator, Ibas steps into a politically charged environment, tasked with stabilizing governance amid escalating tensions. The state remains a crucial economic hub, and his leadership will be under intense scrutiny as he navigates this complex assignment.
President Tinubu, while announcing the appointment, emphasized that the judiciary remains unaffected by the state of emergency, ensuring legal institutions continue to function independently. However, all eyes are now on Ibas, whose military discipline and strategic acumen will be put to the ultimate test in steering Rivers State through this turbulent chapter.
